END OF AN ERA: “CHANCE ENCOUNTERS” CLOSES OPEN SEASON

From Saturday, December 4th, 2004 to Sunday, January 16th, 2005, OpenSeason will present Chance Encounters, its final group show at OpenGround, marking the end of a four-year experiment in a democratic, community-based exhibition process.  “Chance Encounters” will feature four representational artists whose works are either implied or actual narratives.  Their title refers to how the group formed as well as either the process they use to create their work or the quality depicted within the work: their figurative drawings, paintings and collages recontextualize everyday reality as a fantastic yet familiar vision.  The mundane and commonplace is reconfigured so that it has the strangeness yet the inevitability of dreams.

Doug Groupp rescues images and illustrations from out-of-date scientific manuals, schoolbooks and the like to create, through the cutting and then the juxtapositions of the images, a completely new reading.
TheoKisch experiences the everyday as miraculous, which he renders with a primitivist, fauvist stylization.
The sensitive, exquisitely fragile quality of Fay Ku's drawings combines with an unsentimental and explosive look at childhood.
JohnPaulOsorio draws inspiration from the urban landscape, constructing scenes reminiscent of adolescent fantasy world.
