Open Ground’s appearance at the Fountain Art Fair is a crucial evolution of our mission to make space for creative exchange. Art will always be produced by artists who live in a particular place, but now more than anytime in the past, art is consumed and interpreted by a global audience.  When artists bring the global audience home to their communities, the result is almost inevitably displacement and gentrification. The challenge facing supporters of the arts is to locate the exchange between the artistic community and the global art audience on a level playing field, and Open Ground believes that Fountain Miami is the place. We invite you to join us!

ABOUT OPEN GROUND

Open Ground is a social space and an open network, constituted by artists, but open to all. Open Ground has emerged from an eight-year experiment with a revolving roster of multidisciplinary artists who support and contextualize each other’s creative work through exhibitions, performances and studio critiques.

The collective was originally housed in a gallery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, where artists practiced an open-source, consensus-based curatorial process. The space became a breeding ground for community building, a place to support local politics, and a headquarters for radical ideas, experimental work and progressive dialogue.  Open Ground has nurtured a wide range of artistic styles, and brought hundreds of visitors into a conversation about art and community. We’ve articulated values of openness, generosity, experimentation and DIY-volunteerism that are essential to the progressive spirit of art.

Though early in each of their careers, the participating artists have leveraged the support of Open Ground to develop their voice, creating artwork that is unexpectedly inclusive and beautifully aware of our environment. Our dialog is based on profound respect for each other’s cultural and artistic differences, moving beyond the identity politics of the 1990’s to embody El Nuevo Estilo. Literally a former unisex salon used for a recent exhibition, El Nuevo Estilo is also the territory we claim as artists. Open Ground sees itself in the tradition of a Brooklyn salon: a community center where creativity is practiced in the service of personal and cultural expression.  The art manifested, as shown at the Fountain Art Fair, joins the contemporary art dialog with a clarion voice.
